Nevermind the conservative Sarah Palin detractors (of which I have not catalogued enough); now there’s a wholesale disavowing of the entire McCain ticket (although, what do you want a bet, these guys–and of course, they are all guys in this video–will still vote for him). Jed Lewison has compiled a fine collection of naysayers here and, along with Barath Raghavan, has launched a page devoted to McCain ship jumpers here. Thirty-eight entries and growing! Of course, many of these people are angry at McCain for not pulling out all the stops on his smear tactics, so I don’t have the slightest shred of respect for their positions, but hey, the more GOP voters they alienate, the better.

Congrats, Mr. Krugman! As the NYT reports, the Nobel was for Krugman’s academic work prior to his own NYT reporting. You can read the mind-numbing (for English majors) description of his economic models, as well as praise and criticism of “politicizing” his economic reporting (which I, for one, remain extremely grateful for; the man calls it like he sees it) in the Times article. Here’s an easier explanation of his Nobel-winning accomplishment:

“Krugman’s trade models became the standard in the economics profession both because they fit the world a bit better and because they were masterpieces of mathematical modeling,” said Edward L. Glaeser, a professor at Harvard University who also studies economic geography. “His models’ combination of realism, elegance and tractability meant that they could provide the underpinnings for thousands of subsequent papers on trade, economic growth, political economy and especially economic geography.”

It was one thing to watch in amazement as Kristol disassociated himself fast & furiously from the McCain campaign on Fox News yesterday. Turns out that was really low on the disbelief meter compared to today’s news. Now the McCain campaign is accusing Bill Kristol–the vile archneocon who has been actively perpetuating the myth that Sarah Palin would make a terrific VP–of being in Camp Obama? That is one of the funniest, most bizarre things I have heard yet in this election season. Just hilarious. Keith-O and Rachel are going to have a field day with this one. I’ve forced myself to watch a few of the McCain spokespeople videos, but I really can’t bear to post them. You can click here to see the vid on Think Progress (h/t Jed Report).

Yesterday on Fox News Sunday, Bill Kristol said John McCain’s campaign has really become “a pathetic campaign.” In his New York Times op-ed this morning, Kristol went further, suggesting that McCain should “fire his campaign” and “start over.” Asked to respond to Kristol’s criticisms, McCain campaign spokeswoman Nancy Pfotenhauer said on Fox News:

Well, you know Bill is entitled to his perspective. And I used to work for Bill. And I can tell you personally sometimes he’s brilliant and sometimes he’s not. And this is one where it’s the latter category. You know, I think unfortunately he has bought into the Obama campaign’s party line.

Hold onto your hats! I’d say we have an orange or red alert on our hands!

In his excellent post here, Silver speculates about impending McCain campaign stunts in light of the incredible strangeness of Drudge trumpeting a distinctly non-newsworthy 1-2 point uptick in polls in McCain’s favour. Plus, you know, last debate this Wednesday! Quick, somebody think of something!

The McCain campaign is planning on a major “reboot” of its campaign in some point in advance of Wednesday night’s debate. This will take on something of the form that Bill Kristol advocates in his must-read Monday AM piece in the Times, including some combination of (i) pledging to run a positive campaign; (ii) firing/demoting Steve Schmidt and or/Rick Davis; (iii) apologizing for his campaign’s tone. In fact, Kristol’s column may be something of a trial balloon for this strategy.

What the McCain campaign really, really doesn’t want is for this move to be portrayed as desperate stunt. McCain has already developed a reputation for being a bit erratic under pressure — the ABC/Post poll now shows that a 48-45 plurality of voters trust Obama to handle an “unexpected major crisis” — and Bill Burton and Robert Gibbs must be foaming at the mouth waiting to spin something like this.
